We just LOVE looking through old camp photos. Hempy Harris, who was the co-director of camp with her sister, Francis, in the 1920’s – 30’s, kept collections of Skyland snapshots that we enjoy looking through to see how much, and how little, camp has changed through the years.
Recently, we came across these pages in Hempy’s scrapbook, which show Skyland campers in the 1930’s camping out at Eagle’s Nest and “at the foot of Pisgah”. We see them carrying their gear together, chatting around the campfire, and laughing in their cots. These scenes are SO familiar because to this day, Skyland campers go on Campout each session. We play and hike in the mountain scenery, and we sing around the campfire under the stars, just like the girls who came before us.
