Stories Around the Campfire: Lori

We’ve been collecting stories from campers, parents, alumnae, and staff about their experiences at Skyland to share in the next edition of our ink-and-paper newsletter, Mail Call. We recently received this story from former archery counselor, Lori, and it’s such a simple story that speaks volumes about what a Skyland summer can mean to those of us who are lucky enough to spend time on this “hill not far from Clyde”:

“I wanted to share the story of a simple quote from a staff member that means so much to me in retrospect. I served as an archery counselor in the summer of 2013 while I was in college. I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to go in life or what I was even capable of achieving. Madi Weisberg, camp director at the time, turned to me and said she had no doubt I’d be working at the State Department or something else cool in a few years. I was struck by the confidence she had in me- more confidence than I even had in myself. Turns out she was 100% right and I’m on my 4th year with the Department of State! I don’t think I would be here today if I hadn’t spent that summer surrounded by the love and support of fellow camp staff like Madi.” – Lori Lawson-Dischner (2013)

We were so moved when we read this story by Lori that we just had to share it now, as well as print it in the Fall 2019 Mail Call. It’s a reminder that camp isn’t just a life-changing experience for our campers, but for staff too!

We love hearing stories from Skylanders, whether it’s a story from the 1960’s or from this past summer! If you’ve got a story, memory, or photo to share, find us on Facebook or fill out this form.

“From a hike with the campers in 2013. It was the hardest hike I had completed at that time (and I may have even cried a little when I finally got to the top…).” -Lori
