The Bug Girl: Strong Girl Saturday

Sophia Spencer, A.K.A. The Bug Girl, with her bug-catching net

Real life 7 year-old Sophia Spencer was bullied for loving bugs. She was made fun of so much that she didn’t talk about bugs- her most favorite thing- at all anymore. That is until a group of scientists all across the internet rallied around her, encouraging her to pursue her passion by starting the #BugsR4Girls hashtag on Twitter and sending her photos and letters! Thanks to the outpouring of support, Sophia found confidence, and now she talks about bugs a whole lot!

She created a children’s book all about bugs, and she’s been on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and NPR to share her knowledge and love of insects.

We love Sophia’s story because it reminds us that it’s not just ok to be different- it’s AWESOME being different. Embrace your passions and share them with the world. No one can be you.

Check out Sophia’s AMAZING book, The Bug Girl: A True Story. It’s a great read for girls of all ages! And be sure to check our blog every Saturday for more #StrongGirlSaturday inspiration.
