Tips for Returning Campers, Part 1: You’re a Leader Now

Hello returning camper!

If you’re like us, you’ve been dreaming of being on Skyland Hill all winter long. Our staff is so excited to welcome you back to camp this summer. We’re going to share a few tips with you about making the most of your second, third or even fourth Skyland summer experience. Every summer at Skyland is full of familiar traditions – quite a few of which have been kept up for 100 years. That being said, sometimes things seem a bit different when you come back to camp… so here’s Tip #1 for making it a stellar summer.

Tip #1: You’re a Leader Now!

Think about someone you met during your first camp season that seemed to really know how things work at Skyland. That person probably helped you feel a bit more at home, even if she just showed you where the extra games or books are kept, or reminded you that it was time for Clubhouse!

Now you are that wise camper who knows the lay of the land, and can help others. It feels great to help new campers understand where stuff is, the flow of the schedule, or what they can expect at meals. Share your favorite dessert, camp tradition or song with a new camper. Notice if anyone in your cabin seems homesick or doesn’t quite know how to do mail call in the first couple days of camp.

Helping others feel at home in the camp community is fun and easy if you just observe the other campers around you. Just think – this year you’ll be able to be that camper who helps others feel more comfortable. In fact, you may just be that one individual who another camper remembers for years to come as “the one” who was helpful and welcoming in her first Skyland summer!

We’ll see you again soon on Skyland Hill!
