To our Skyland friends and community 

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the very difficult decision to cancel all camper programs for the summer of 2020. We made this announcement on Thursday and have spent the weekend making phone calls and speaking to alumnae and current camp families before making this announcement public on social media. 

While it’s nearly inconceivable to consider a summer without camp, we need to do just that in order to reset Skyland for the years to come. 

While Skyland has been able to provide wonderful camp experiences, it has been challenging to make this economically sustainable due to its small size. As we enter a new decade, we need to make the necessary changes for Skyland to thrive.

 We have seen campers take a summer off from Skyland to experience something very different than camp, such as traveling abroad or participating in specialized athletic and academic competitions. While we missed those campers, we rejoiced when they returned the next year, and loved seeing and hearing how they have grown through their experiences.

Similarly, Skyland now will have a summer off so she too can grow in ways that will make her stronger and better positioned for years to come.

We recognize that many of you will be disappointed, and it’s hard for us as well. We also know that sometimes it takes a pause, and a reset, in order to grow and flourish. We truly want Skyland to serve you, the community and the world in bigger and better ways.

As we have communicated the news, we’ve received incredible support from parents, alumnae, and community members, and we have been reminded of just how important and transformative Skyland has been for so many people. We are so thankful for these positive and powerful messages!
