Tips For Returning Campers, Part 4: Our Friendship Feels Different

We know from talking to campers that girls always look forward to seeing their camp friends from last year. Maybe you haven’t seen your friend since last summer. Or maybe you’ve been sending letters or emails all winter long!

It makes sense that you’re so excited to see your friend at camp this year! At the same time, it’s good to be ready if something feels a little different. At this age, girls grow quickly, and sometimes you’ll find that you and your camp friend don’t click quite like you did last year. If that happens, just know that it’s totally normal to grow a lot in a short period of time. It’s also okay if you have grown in different ways!

Remember that there are so many friendships awaiting at Skyland- some old, and some new. Be open to everyone you meet, knowing that in five minutes you could be giggling your head off with your new camp friend. Every camper makes new friends every season, no matter how many times she’s been back to Skyland.  That doesn’t make old friendships any less meaningful.

One last tip: remember that different doesn’t mean bad. At camp, we’re here to celebrate our differences and what makes each girl a unique individual. If things have shifted with a friend since last year, know that there are so many unique friends waiting for you at Skyland, at least a handful will be the right camp friends for you.
